The Joie Chronicles Chapter 2 (Republish)

Frankly, I learned about her being sick from Anna at that fateful conference after Joie left. I never told Joie that I know. Eventually, she let us know.

I was shocked the first time I learned that she has cancer. I never knew someone, much less a friend, who has leukemia. I never took pity or felt sorry for her. I was much more worried for her, and for me because I might lose somebody that I care about.

You will never figure out that she has leukemia from the posts in her thread at the WITCH board. She constantly changes her display name to fun things. She'll post "nyaha!" if she finds your post funny. She also posts in pink, earning her "agent" name Geek in the Pink. Most of all, she looks at being sick in a positive way.

Our midnight chatting about anything under the sun never showed that she feels sick at the moment. Though she tells me, she would do so by replying with laughing smileys and her usual "nyaha!". You'll never really know she's sick when you chat with her. It just shows when you ask her if she'd seen the latest movie releases.

As her condition is delicate her grand-pére, who lives with her in France, does not allow her to go out. She'll know the stories just by listening to her friends who've watched the latest releases. I once asked her if she's going to watch The Da Vinci Code. She said she wants to and she was imagining how the opening scene will be. I also remembered telling her that I was saddened and crying at the end of X-Men The Last Stand. she told me not to cry though she didn't know what exactly the ending of X-Men The Last Stand was. I once told her that I can send her pirated copies; we just laughed at the idea. Next thing I know, she posted that it really was a very sad ending. Her friend told her about it. I promised her when she comes back I'll tell her the whole story.

I learned recently from Anna, who's in contact with Joie's fiancé, that she's doing all right. I also learned that in April, her doctors stopped her chemotherapy. She was not responding to it anymore.

The Joie Chronicles Chapter 1 (Republish)

I miss my friend. She's been gone for several days now. I hope she comes back okay. I've only known Joelle Maxine Lindley, Joie for short, for about four months but we've already become friends. We met through an online friend, Anna. Oh yes, she's also a member of the W.I.T.C.H. board. We met while in a conference chat with some WITCHies in YIM. She's 20 and is half-English, half-French. We've only said hi and hello in the posts at the board before. It then turned to midnight chatting in YIM, then the CBox in a forum where we're both members also. Next thing we knew, we were "conquering" the chat zones online, talking nonsense, never knowing that by doing so we were fast becoming friends. We both learned that we have some things in common: love for Harry Potter and love for Barbie Fairytopia.

Our love for Harry Potter helped me form an idea to make a role-playing forum of our own. Since I'm not familiar with Proboards environment, she helped me, thus becoming my co-admin, do the skins and the info centre. We were thinking and joking about what we're going to place in the boards. She helped me a lot.

Since she lives in France, there's a six-hour time difference. Although I can stay up at 4 in the morning, sometimes it was also a problem. So the e-mails came through. We passed on the pictures we can use for our forum. Then we talk about nonsense again, joking that we have to do the pictures fast. We also share the love of dowloading additional Photoshop brushes so we can use it for the pictures. The first time she got me hooked on this brush business, I sent her a picture of crowded brushes. She said it was fun to look at and cool. I even pointed out the fleur-de-lis, France's flower.

I never thought Joie and I would click. She is such a bundle of joy, laughing at odd things, you never know that she's ill. In one forum, she told us that she'll be leaving. On 21 June, she left for Maryland, for Johns-Hopkins. She'll have her operation there. She has leukemia.
