The Aftermath

Monday, October 02, 2006

Thursday. From the moment I got out of the office, at 5:30 am from working the graveyard shift, I knew that I would be wet. I had heard in the news the night before that the storm, "Milenyo", will unleash its forces on the Metro the next day. Good thing I had brought my Harry Potter-Dementor raincoat, but because the wind is very strong, I still got soaking wet the moment I stepped out. There were no more transportation from where I usually ride to go the tram. I rode the other way and fortunately, the tram's still operating. I hailed a cab from my station, really, really soaking wet to go home. It was frightening outside: nearly flooded roads, the other vehicles splashing water to other cars. I had a Starbucks breakfast with me, which I bought the night before. The bag was ripped because it got wet. And that was just the morning.

By 10 am before I went to sleep, I could already hear the wind howling far away. We still have electricity. I was in the computer a few hours before, surfing and watching Nip/Tuck Season 2: Bobbi Broderick (again), and the electricity was already fluctuating. Getting frustrated from the computer going on and off, I finally turned it off. I went to sleep and woke hours later to the howlings of the wind and the fact that electricity was already shut off. My sister was supposed to go home at about 5 pm. She SMSed my mum that the tram is non-operational and there was completely no more transportation (we were on the same avenue, different companies, hence different buildings). I called my office and told them that I wouldn't be able to come that evening due to the fact that there were no more transportation and there were debris flying here and there, helter skelter. The winds probably stopped at about 5 or 6 in the evening.

The next day, the storm was completely gone, but it left a devastating sight. The tram was still non-operational, billboards went down, trees uprooted, and electricity still off in 70% of the city. And that was just in the Metro.

I finally went to work that night. Since the tram is still off, I rode on a cab. What a sad sight!! The whole length of EDSA was like a warpath or something. Half of the whole avenue's dark and dangerous. Even the road to where I usually pass to go to work is still dark. In some parts of EDSA, traffic was bad.

Two days later, the billboards are still down. There was a building from where the tram goes up that was wrecked because a huge billboard went down. All the advertisement boards along EDSA were bare.

These pictures were taken by my sister in the University of the Philippines, Sunday morning (she has her licensure reviews on this day). And this was just in one place.
